Avoid these top 10 no-nos for your online dating profile

Whether you’ve been looking for love online or you’re just working up the courage to start, there are rules of engagement that are helpful to understand

Whether you’ve been looking for love online or you’re just working up the courage to start, there are rules of engagement that are helpful to understand. Relationship expert Siggy Flicker joined Kathie Lee and Hoda on TODAY on Friday morning to share must-know tips about setting up an online dating profile. Not sure where to start? Check out Siggy’s list of what you should not do on your profile:

1. DON’T hide your face behind a pair of sunglasses or a hat. It makes people wonder what else you might be hiding, or maybe you’re in witness protection? Use a great picture that shows who you are.

2. DON’T reveal too much physically. Showing too much skin is tacky and devalues you. Go for classy. Isn’t that the kind of person you want to attract?

3. DON’T use a selfie. Maybe it’s just me, but they never look good, and it feels like you don’t have a friend who would take a nice picture of you. Recruit a friend and take a quality picture.

4. DON’T lie — especially about your age. Be realistic. Your dating range should never be younger than you. If you are 35 years old, you should be looking for someone approximately 38 to 42 years old.

5. DON’T use clichés. Don’t write that you’d love to snuggle in front of the fireplace and enjoy sunset strolls on the beach. Who doesn’t? Say something interesting about yourself that is unique to you.

6. DON’T reveal confidential information in your profile. For example, your address, place of work, or even the location of your favorite restaurant. Be safe. You’re looking for a date, not a potential stalker — or worse.

7. DON’T be negative. Your profile is all about what you like and want. If all you do is rant about your ex, or things you hate and won’t do, it’s a turn-off. People like positive people. Snark doesn’t look good on anyone.

8. DON’T ramble on and succumb to TMI. Your profile is an appetizer, a teaser. This is not the place to tell your entire life story. Save something for the face to face.

9. DON’T forget to spell-check and proofread your profile. Make sure you’ve said what you want to say clearly. Don’t underestimate the power of spell-check! Misspelled words and bad grammar can make you look like you don’t care.

10. DON’T expect your online profile to do all the work for you. Use social networks to find others who share your passions, but then get out there and enjoy those passions yourself. Step away from your electronic devices and live your life!
